Colossus Series
Exhibits of Note
1207 Gallery, Newton Centre, MA, 1981
Colossus, Galatea Fine Art, Boston, MA, 2012
“In Cynthia’s solo exhibit Colossus at Galatea Fine Art, one enters a mythical world where nature cannot be trusted. Her orchids and coleus plants are excessive, and greedy in their urges to survive. Ms. Maurice uses shifts in scale, combining her interest in clusters with architectural forms. Her drawings pervert even the most innocent of viewers with their ravenous beauty. “
Masha Obolensky, Director, Playwright
“Her Coleus (Diptych), in charcoal and pastel, heaves and shimmies. The outlined leaves, each veined with red and tinged with yellow with no green in sight, resemble the patterns of wings in flight. Iris Forms, a pastel, explodes with droopy, voluptuous petals, cradled in spiky, upstanding leaves, all drawn in loose, assertive strokes.”
