Ponds
Exhibits of Note
Natural Immersion, Boston Center for the Arts Mills Gallery, 1996
Inaugural Exhibit, Gallery 10, Hilton Head, South Carolina, 2000
Reflections, Albright College's Freedman Gallery, Reading, PA, 2003
In this series, Maurice has become fixated on a pond, and her fixation walks that tightrope between compulsion and celebration. These wall-sized works mimic the quiet grandeur of the pond. The paintings take you in like bodies of water, majestic, essential, and motionless.
With all its reflections and changes in light and color, the pond's surface occupies the bulk of these large paintings. Technically, the artist was inspired by old masters’ techniques, building up glazes as veils of color over a monochromatic underpainting. The layering process enabled her to simplify forms, resulting in unexpected solutions. Maurice’s exact exaggerations of light, trees, and clouds- as seen through and on the water–deliver breathtaking clarity.
