Fresh Cut Series

Exhibits of Note
Cynthia Maurice, Fresh Cut New Work, Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, MA 2010
Off the Wall, Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, MA 2010
Fresh Cut, Newton Free Library, Newton, MA 2009

The Fresh Cut series explores the fleeting nature of flowers, capturing their transformation from bud to decay. By focusing on an ephemeral subject, these paintings incorporate the passage of time as an essential element of their creation. Both formally and figuratively, the works evoke a sense of portraiture.

The drawings reveal the artistic process, with visible erasures, re-drawings, and journal notes integrated into the compositions.

A piece from this series, Almost, won First Prize in the Danforth Museum’s Annual Juried Members’ Show in 2010. The exhibition was juried by Jen Mergel, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Helen Molesworth, Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Their selection reflected a contemporary vision of art that challenges traditional conventions and pushes the boundaries of its medium.

“Cynthia Maurice’s Almost creates a new whole out of
fragmented imagery on a cut and patched surface, suggesting
correction, dissection, and hidden budding potential.”
