Exhibit of Note
Reflections, Albright College's Freedman Gallery, Reading, PA, 2003
This series of works tells the story of a Boston artist who developed a deep appreciation for the city of Reading during a year-long stay from 1999 to 2000. Cynthia moved there while her husband, Richard, a Reading native, was on a teaching sabbatical. Viewed from her third-story studio, Maurice portrayed urban scenes using oil paint and charcoal.
Her oil paintings depict the Reading skyline with a serene, almost classical Dutch quality. These sky-dominant pieces are rich in texture, with thick, creamy brushstrokes that radiate a luminous internal light. In contrast, her charcoal drawings capture the chaotic charm of urban architecture—the scattered arrangement of small factories and homes set against the landscape. Through her work, Maurice conveys both the stark solitude of the city streets and the presence of industry, past and present.
