Maurice’s longtime interest in human anatomy eventually extended to the anatomy of the landscape. Seeking an accessible landscape to study, she rented a summer cabin in Central Vermont, where farmland met steep pastures and distant views of the Green Mountains.
What began in the 1970s became an annual summer retreat, deepening her connection to the land. The first days back were often challenging—resettling, unpacking, and facing the blank canvas, the vast unknown. To ease into the process, she turned to sketching, wandering the fields, and noting what inspired her.
She enjoyed analyzing forms, viewing the landscape as anatomy, and speculating about the forces beneath the surface. Over the years, she produced a continuing series of oil paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings, shaped by her summers in Vermont.
