Western Heights Series
Exhibit of Note
What Lies Beneath, Bricks at the Mill, Brickbottom Artists at the Old Schwamb Mill, Arlington, MA
Ms. Maurice’s deep interest in human anatomy expanded to include the landscape. Each summer in Vermont, she enjoyed analyzing the shifting forms and color changes created by shadows.
Meanwhile, at home, the TV played Westerns—a favorite of her husband, Richard. While he was engrossed in the gunfights and outlaws, Cynthia was captivated by the vast, cinematic backdrops—the wild terrains of towering mountains and stark deserts, a striking contrast to the gentle, lush landscapes of New England. The Rockies, shaped by wind, time, and rain, felt like an entirely different world.
The following summer, she took a planned leave of absence from work and family, packed a van with art supplies, a sleeping bag, and—at her father-in-law’s insistence—a shotgun, and headed West. She painted her way across the Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico Rockies.
The next summer, she traveled and painted again, this time from San Francisco to the Sierras. Cynthia’s focused depictions of mountain peaks and lakes capture the panoramic grandeur of these untamed and ever-shifting American landscapes.
